A REDESIGN OF THE MARÍAS SUBMARINE

ART DIRECTION, GRAPHIC DESIGN, PACKAGING

The Marías’ 2024 album Submarine is one of my favorite albums from the year and I wanted to re-imagine the visual direction for the project. Using Bethany Vargas’ stunning photography, I wanted the art direction to feel steeped in the lush, layered production and reflect the album’s themes of heartbreak, isolation, and solitude.

Isolation can make us feel like we’re living outside of ourselves– foreign and unfamiliar to our own thoughts and identity. it feels mechanical and robotic, like moving through routine without direction.

the new art direction leans into this feeling, with the new cover saturated in a dark, all-encompassing void. the physical media is styled on materials that evoke a harsh, abrasive feeling to mirror the album’s feelings.
